Parent Involvement

Parent Involvement is always welcome and encouraged in third grade! There are many options and opportunities for helping; both in class(field trips, reading volunteers, guest speaking, cleaning, special projects...or at-home (stapling book order packets, assembling project materials...) If you don't see anything listed that meets your needs or availability, please let me know and we'll find a project that is a good fit!

Please check your calendars for our field trips this year! They are a definite highlight of our program at CHPCS.

I will let you know as soon as possible if there are any changes to our schedule through the year.

For most volunteer opportunities I will be using sign-up genius, but it’s always fine to email me with questions and notification. Field Trip Sign-up 2016-17

Individual Help and Small Group Support
We have several slots during the day when students could use a little extra one-on-one or small group help with literacy and math skills. If this is something you are interested in, please let me know. I will also occasionally send out a call for volunteers and would be happy to see you!

Guest Speaking and Projects
I recognize that parents are extremely valuable resources and love having them come in to lead lessons! We do our Core Knowledge history and science Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from  10:00am to 10:45am. If you have ideas, experiences, or skills to share that relate to our Core Knowledge units, please let me know so I can schedule your involvement.

Cleaning
Our classroom must be vacuumed regularly in order to keep the learning environment clean and orderly for the students. It makes a huge difference! Cascade Heights has an extremely limited custodial staff and so we need everyone to pitch in. That way we can keep our focus on learning.

Reader of the Week
Each Thursday during our library time (11:15-11:45), our Guest Reader will read a picture book that they’ve chosen to share. Total reading time should be no longer than 15 min (10-15 minutes is ideal).  Every student will have a turn to be a Reader of the Week this year. If your student is worried about reading aloud, you can help them by practicing a book over an extended time period until they feel confident with it. Students selected their dates today in class. Most students have weeks or even months of advanced notice. Please place your child’s date on your calendar and build in the time beforehand to help them select and practice their book.

In addition to our student readers, we have 12 open slots that still need to be filled…. And we would LOVE to have parents, grandparents, aunts or uncles, or even older siblings join us to read a story! PLEASE help your child share this invitation to the special adults in their life!

PTA
This year PTA meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month from 6:30pm-7:30pm. The PTA is in charge of fundraisers like the Jog-a-thon, building strong school-home-community partnerships, and facilitating parent involvement in their child’s education. Please check your calendar to see if you can make it!
Birthdays
If your child decides to celebrate his or her birthday in class, please let me know at least one week in advance. The treat must adhere to our healthy foods policy. Please also be mindful of food allergies (and bonus points for curriculum tie-ins!). We will celebrate the birthday during our afternoon break at 1:45pm.
Communication

Planner: Students will write assignments and upcoming events in their planners every day and communicate their color on the classroom behavior system. Please review the information in the planner, discuss each item with your 3rd grader, and sign it each night.

Classroom Blog: There will be updates to the classroom blog a few times per month or unit. You will find information about field trips, our daily schedule, unit summaries, and learning objectives.  For internet security purposes, students will not be referenced by name at any point. Day-to-day updates, reminders, and photos will be shared via Class Dojo.

Email: My email is a.gausman@chpcs.org. I will use email for reminders and updates, as well as individual communication about your student.

Phone:  The school number is 503-653-3996. Our day is very busy, and the phone is not the best way to reach me. If there is an urgent message, please call the office and leave a message directly with Mrs. Marlatt. Sending me a Class Dojo message is also a very effective way to send time-sensitive information. If you need a call back, I will return calls at my next opportunity.

In Person: Formal conferences are scheduled for October 28th and November 4th. Informal conferences or quick check-ins are welcome and encouraged!
